{"id":6934,"date":"2016-09-20T16:58:29","date_gmt":"2016-09-20T20:58:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thekjblog.com\/?p=6934"},"modified":"2018-01-23T16:24:33","modified_gmt":"2018-01-23T20:24:33","slug":"to-crop-or-not-ohio-states-noah-browns-catch-of-the-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kjimages.com\/blog\/2016\/09\/20\/to-crop-or-not-ohio-states-noah-browns-catch-of-the-year\/","title":{"rendered":"To Crop or Not &#8211; Ohio State&#8217;s Noah Brown&#8217;s Catch of the Year"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align: center;\">As both a photographer and photo editor for USA Today Sports, I found myself in a situation that almost every photographer deals with on a daily basis. \u00a0Should I crop or not? \u00a0And if so, how much? \u00a0Last Saturday, I was fortunate enough to capture what might already arguably be the college football catch of the year when Ohio State&#8217;s Noah Brown made an incredible one handed catch with the ball pinned against the back of Oklahoma Sooners defensive back\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\">Michiah<\/span>\u00a0Quick. \u00a0I was using the new <a title=\"Canon 1DX MArk II\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usa.canon.com\/internet\/portal\/us\/home\/products\/details\/cameras\/dslr\/eos-1d-x-mark-ii\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Canon 1DX Mark II<\/a> with the 200-400mm lens and\u00a0the\u00a0combination flawlessly captured\u00a0the\u00a0whole sequence in perfect focus! (So thanks Canon!!)<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">Once I got back to the workroom to edit my images at halftime, I immediately pulled up that sequence as I knew it was more than likely the topic of everyone&#8217;s conversation around the country.\u00a0 Usually with a sequence of photos, I try to pick 1 or maybe at most 2 shots to send in as editors usually do not want to see more than that.(It can get pretty\u00a0repetitive otherwise.) \u00a0I knew that this photo was special though and so I decided to basically crop the sequence 3 different ways. \u00a0Here is my reasoning&#8230;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">1. \u00a0I chose to leave the photo as a loose horizontal. \u00a0More and more web clients are choosing to use horizontal photos and by leaving the composition pretty loose, it allows them to fit the photo into their webpages, designs, etc&#8230; \u00a0Normally, I look for clean backgrounds, but in a photo like this where the sidelines are ridiculously packed with people, I think being able to see all of their reactions actually adds to\u00a0the\u00a0storytelling aspect.(Love\u00a0the\u00a0joy on the OSU band members, the mascot, and the fans along with the despair and disbelief on the faces of the Oklahoma fans.)<\/div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/kevinjairaj.goodgallery.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/blogcatch1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6935\" src=\"http:\/\/kevinjairaj.goodgallery.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/blogcatch1.jpg\" alt=\"blogcatch1\" width=\"900\" height=\"605\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kjimages.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/blogcatch1.jpg 900w, https:\/\/kjimages.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/blogcatch1-892x600.jpg 892w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">2. \u00a0I chose to do a tight\u00a0horizontal\u00a0crop on just the catch. \u00a0Lots of newspapers and other clients prefer solid, tight action. \u00a0This also makes an ugly background not seem as bad. It&#8217;s what I usually try to do 80% of the time, so I had to send in an\u00a0\u00a0option for them.<\/div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/kevinjairaj.goodgallery.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/blogcatch2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6936\" src=\"http:\/\/kevinjairaj.goodgallery.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/blogcatch2.jpg\" alt=\"blogcatch2\" width=\"500\" height=\"353\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">3. \u00a0 Since it was a very important play, I also included a vertical photo as well. \u00a0Even though this will probably be the least used, I\u00a0really like being able to see the dangling legs on both players in mid air with an emphasis on\u00a0the\u00a0action.(You can also still see some of the bystander reaction although not as much as the looser crop.)<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/kevinjairaj.goodgallery.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/blogcatch3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6937\" src=\"http:\/\/kevinjairaj.goodgallery.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/blogcatch3.jpg\" alt=\"blogcatch3\" width=\"383\"
